Mikado Set and Crew
Mikado Show photos

What do you get when you mix Gilbert and Sullivan's classic The Mikado with Austin Powers? You get our production! We took the show, traditionally set in 1890's Japan and put it in the 1960's. The original, though set in Japan, pokes fun at the British Monarchy. We wanted to keep elements of all of that, which is why designers Colleen Dolan, Emily Dusedau, Jacqueline Leung, Jennifer Hellman and Max Todd (all THS '08) decided to create a psychedelic Japanese arch as the upstage center focal point of their set.  After many shows with dull, earthy colors - it was time to brighten things up! We also had sliding doors that resembled traditional Japanese doors in structure, but screamed 1960's with their color and design, partly inspired by the art of Peter Max.

There was a 7' high upper level that we built on the stage. Curved staircases moved about the deck to change the look of the mostly unit set. An 8' diameter round platform also moved on and off to add variety to the look. The pattern and color scheme of the upstage arch and center doors were continued throughout these moving pieces. We also constructed two large cages which were used by our dancers. It may not have looked difficult, but there was an enormous amount of skilled carpentry performed by Adi Azulay, Ricky Fooshee, Max Todd and Dan Vanderlinden (all THS '08).

Lighting by Max Todd and Emily Dusedau (both THS' 08) really punched out the color on the upstage cyclorama. We also chose light pink (R33) and a somewhat deeper than usual blue (R67) for our warm and cool front light. Ten Apollo Color Scrollers loaded with the "Rock 'n' Roll" gel strings were used on all of our backlight fresnels, providing more color choices to add to the look.

This is our most photographed show, for sure. The photos are divided into two sets - the first features the scenery and lighting, as well as the crew and some strike photos. The second set contains all photos shot during performances.
